Career History

Regional Paramedic Program for Eastern Ontario

Web Site Designer, Customer Support, IT Administrator

Ottawa, Ontario
September 2009 – Present

  • Initially hired for a 6 month contract to migrate an existing IT infrastructure managed by the RPPEO to the Ottawa Hospital’s IT Group. This was accomplished on time and under budget.
  • The RPPEO website was in need of a modern, responsive, easy to maintain website, took on the project and has been the web designer for the past 6 years. 
  • The new website for paramedics in Eastern Ontario now has 3 million visits and it the 'front door' for several internally developed tools to allow the various Paramedic services in Ontario to manage their paramedics education and certification (required to work as a paramedic in Ontario).
  • Working directly with the various business groups to develop content, messaging, marketing ideas, ensuring that their message is clear and in line with company values
  • Developed online tools for staff and contract employees to submit and track hours for payroll purposes reducing Human Resources overhead by 6 hours /week
  • Education and Certification of paramedics is a core mandate for the RPPEO, most of which had to be taught in a classroom setting, identifying a need an online learning site was built using Moodle, allowing the RPPEO to reach more medics without the need for costly classroom time that takes paramedics off the road. The online learning site now sees 100 medics per week and saves a total 800 hours of “out of truck time” monthly.
  • Implement and manage sites for 3 additional Ontario Base Hospital groups, Central East Prehospital Care Program, Centre for Paramedic Education and Research, Northwest Region Prehospital Care Program.
  • Developed and maintains online learning sites for the four Ontario Base Hospitals, each with different needs, working directly with the various education leads at each base hospital.

Information Technology, Network Support

Various Businesses 1994-2009

  • WorkShift [2007 - 2009] providing IT support to small to medium businesses in the greater Ottawa area, working independently to maintain servers and desktops. Responsibilities included documentation of systems, changes, weekly reports of work performed. This included maintenance of Windows Servers and desktops as well as providing user support, monitoring daily backups, as well as providing guidance to management regarding proactive updates to hardware and software, then implementing these changes without disrupting daily business activities.
  • Sitel [2004-2007] Providing support to HP Enterprise servers in a 24 hour call centre. Troubleshooting hardware and software issues related to Proliant servers, Generations 1-3.
  • Entrust Technology [1998-2000] Support of the Entrust PKI for users located around the world. Was one of the largest PKI platforms at the time.
  • Ottawa Senators [1996-1998] IT and desktop support for the internal staff at the Ottawa Senators.
  • Amita Corp. [1994-1996] My first job supporting Windows servers, Lan Manager and business web site.

Niall's Doggy Daycare

May 2012 - August 2018
Ottawa, Ontario

  • Following a 1 year Professional Dog Handler program at Forever Friends Dog Training with Cheryl Smith, I opened a Doggy Daycare 2 days a week.
  • Focused on dogs that required extra care, I had an average of 8 dogs on both days over 6 years.
  • Retained most clients for the 6 years of operation, and had a large waiting list for both days.
  • In 2018 the daycare was purchased and moved to 5 days a week,
  • A unique opportunity to learn a great deal about canine and human behaviour, that I've found invaluable in my current career.

Career Expectations

Seeking a position as an intermediate level web designer with a company that values motivated self starters. My current position began as a 6 month contract that started September 9, 2009, however thanks to my ability to identify opportunities to improve existing processes and systems I am still going strong almost 10 years later. I would like an opportunity to continue to grow professionally as a full time employee of a forward thinking business. 

Interests

Being creative. Anything that allows me to build, create or design. This includes:

  • wood working,
  • home renovations,
  • cooking amazing meals for my friends and family,
  • designing websites, photography.

Long time fan of the Ottawa Senators and the NHL.

Any opportunity to work with canines, which includes typical opperant training as well as helping owners to understand the behaviour of their canines. Working with their owners to help understand the issues and how to overcome them.
